Fes is the oldest imperial city of Morocco. It was founded during the 8th-9th centuries by Idris I who also established the Kingdom of Morocco. Fes became an important cultural and educational center. It’s home of the oldest university in the world still functional, the University of Al Quaraouiyine, built in 859.

The Medina can be entered through The Bab Boujloud or the “Blue Gate”, a beautiful ornate gate to the old town. The “Blue Gate” is popular for being nicely replicated in Epcot at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.
Fes is also famous for the biggest and oldest leather tannery in Morocco, Chouara Tannery, where you can witness the path of the leather to the handicrafts in the souks.
